EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's soccer ran its unbeaten streak to five games Sunday, defeating UIW 2-0 on Senior Day at Korte Stadium.
The Cougars improved to 3-2-2 in Ohio Valley Conference play and 4-8-2 overall. The win moved SIUE in sole possession of third place in the league.
UIW, which now has an eight-game winless streak, dropped to 0-4-3 in OVC play and 4-6-5 overall.
Evan Howard added to his team-leading point total with a goal and an assist for the day. Howard opened the scoring in the 40th minute. SIUE was awarded a penalty kick when Murray Peart was pushed in the 18-yard box. Howard's penalty was saved by UIW goalkeeper Alejandro DeLaTorre, but the rebound came back to Howard, who tapped it in for his seventh goal of the season and SIUE led 1-0 at halftime.
The Cougar defense withstood a charge from the Cardinals in the second half without yielding a shot on goal.
Howard set up SIUE's second goal in the 81st minute. Working towards the corner flag on the right side, Howard floated a ball along the end line, which came back to the edge of the six-yard box. Peart redirected inside the near post for his first career goal and a 2-0 advantage.
Overall UIW outshot SIUE 14-8. The Cardinals had three shots on goal, all coming in the first half.
SIUE goalkeeper Noah Schediweiler made three saves on his way to his fourth shutout in the last five games.
The Cougars next go on the road for a Saturday game at Liberty.
