EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE wrestling won six matches, including a second-period fall by
Caleb Tyus, as the Cougars defeated Northwestern 20-13 in the home season opener at First Community Arena.
Tyus, ranked No. 18 nationally by Flowrestling, pinned Sam Cartella in 3 minutes, 30 seconds. Tyus chose down for the second period, reversed Cartella and immediately put him on his back.
The move electrified the Cougars' crowd and gave SIUE its first lead of the dual meet after
Alec Peralta had collected a 5-1 decision over Giosue Hickman at 141 pounds.
Brock Woodcock and
Dominic Lopez also picked up back-to-back wins at 165 pounds and 174 pounds. Woodcock blanked Jacob Bostelman 7-0.
Dominic Lopez came from behind in the third period and won on a penalty point in the overtime period.
Nick Nosler gave SIUE a 17-13 lead after his 197-pound win over Alex Smith. Nosler's late takedown helped seal the win 6-4.
Bryson Buhk closed out the match with an 8-2 decision over Dirk Morley at 285 pounds.
SIUE's next action is a triangular home match next Sunday against Aurora and Maryville.Â
