MACOMB, Ill. – SIUE Women's basketball fell 75-51 in a tough road matchup against Western Illinois Monday.
The Cougars move to 8-4 overall and 1-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play, while the Leathernecks improve to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in OVC play.
SIUE and WIU went point-for-point in the first quarter, ending the period tied at 15. WIU created separation in the second quarter, taking a 37-20 lead into halftime.
Kiyoko Proctor sparked the Cougars early in the third quarter with a layup, and
Emiyah Cobb later added a steal and layup with 1:59 remaining to cut the deficit to 11 points. SIUE scored 18 points in the third quarter but was unable to keep the momentum in the final quarter.
Lauren Miller led SIUE with 21 points and five rebounds. Proctor followed with 14 points, shooting 4-5 from beyond the arc.
Syanne Mohamed led the team with eight rebounds while adding a block and a steal.
As a team, SIUE made 36.5 percent (19-52) of their shots from the field, 31.3 percent (5-16) shots from three-point range and 80 percent (8-10) of their shots from the line.
The Cougars will return to First Community Arena to Ring in the new year, taking on Southern Indiana. Tip off is set for 1 pm on Jan. 1.
