EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -
Danny Martinez made sure SIUE wrestling fans went home happy, posting a second-period fall to give SIUE a 22-12 victory over Ohio at First Community Arena.
SIUE improved to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in the Mid-American Conference. Ohio dropped to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in the MAC. SIUE's seven dual match victories is the most in the Division I era and the most since the 2003-04 season.
Martinez's match proved pivotal as the 10th match of the evening. With SIUE holding a 16-12 lead, Martinez delivered a 4 minute, 47 second pin, the only fall of the match.
The Cougars and the Bobcats went back and forth with each team trading wins for the first eight matches. SIUE was victorious at 157 with
Eric Almarinez, at 174 with
Luke Odom, at 197 with
Nick Nosler, and at 125 with
Drew Davis.
Nosler's win was a key victory for the Cougars, a 5-1 win over nationally-ranked Austin Starr. Davis provided the first bonus points, a 17-3 rout over Ohio's Ryan Meek.
The Cougars would break the cycle of back and forth wins at 133 pounds when
Marcel Lopez earned a 5-2 win over T.J. England. That set up the final match with Martinez.
SIUE now has a quick turnaround and heads to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, to face Central Michigan in a 1 p.m. road MAC dual Sunday.
