HILTON HEAD, S.C. – SIUE women's tennis opened its spring trip with a sweeping 7-0 victory over George Mason.
SIUE improved to 10-2 while George Mason dropped to 3-5. It was SIUE's first 7-0 sweep since the opening match of the season against Illinois-Springfield (Jan. 18).
Playing at Hilton Head High School, the Cougars swept all three doubles matches to secure the double point.
One-by-one the Cougars tripped up the Patriots in singles. Chloe Koons led the charge with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over Brooklyn Siegel. Margaux Guibal Britt closed out her No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-3 over Mary Young.
Paige Duncan bested Noelle Talarek at No. 4 singles 6-1, 7-5 to clinch the team victory. Payton Tomichek defeated Maya Bayat at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-2.
Amelia Gorman and Stefaniya Anikina both won third-set tiebreakers after the overall match was decided. Gorman bested Cenan Liu at No. 1 singles 6-3, 4-6, 11-9. Anikina downed Lauren Splett 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 at No. 5 singles.
SIUE continues this trip with one more match Thursday, a 12 p.m. CT matchup at Hilton Head Beach & Tennis Resort against South Carolina State.
