ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Lindenwood right-hander Josh Newell tossed a complete game, four-hitter Saturday as the Lions blanked SIUE 7-0 in the second game of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.
The Cougars fell to 7-4 in OVC play and 14-19 overall. Lindenwood is 6-4 in the OVC and 17-17 overall.
Joshua Heyder had two of SIUE's four hits, finishing 2-4 with a double. Chase Bloomer and Daniel Gierer had the other two hits.
Newell (6-2) struck out seven and walked just one.
Lindenwood scored twice in the second and added three runs in the fourth to go up 5-0.
SIUE starter Garrett Helsel (0-4) worked into the fourth before surrendering a hit and hitting a batter. He allowed four runs on four hits and struck out two.
Lindenwood added two runs in the seventh. Kyle Athmer gave up three runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
Joseph Martin finished the seventh with a strikeout and Andrew Ressler pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
Kam Edwards, Jake Radosevich and Evan Funkhouser each had two hits to lead the Lions.
The rubber game of the three-game series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
