Cougars Finish Runner-Up at OVC Softball Championships

PEORIA, Ill. – By the narrowest of margins in Ohio Valley Conference Championships softball title game history, Eastern Illinois edged SIUE 1-0 in eight innings.

The first-ever OVC title game to go extra innings provided a pitcher's duel between EIU's Karlie McKenzie and SIUE's Avery Arwood. McKenzie, 11-3, fanned seven for the complete-game victory. Arwood dropped to 11-8 for the season after gaining five strikeouts.

Anna Henderson, Raegan Duncan and Kaylynn Salyars were named to the All-Tournament team. The trio were the top three hitters in the OVC Championships for the Cougars. Anna Henderson hit .471 over the five games of the tournament. Salyars recorded six hits in five games, including a home run. Duncan recorded the game winner in SIUE's first game of the Championships and led the team with two doubles.

The Cougars finished the season 32-22 and recorded 19 OVC wins, the most since the 2015 season. SIUE captured the No. 2 seed in the OVC Championships and finished as the runner-up after beginning the season picked eighth in the OVC Preseason Poll.

SIUE forced an extra game in the Championship, handing Eastern Illinois its only loss of the weekend. Emma Henderson started, was relieved by Avery Arwood and then re-entered the game for the final out in a 4-3 victory earlier in the day.

The Cougars scored all four of its runs in the fifth inning. Madison Kearns and Salyars each had an RBI. Anna Henderson single home one run later in the inning as SIUE scored twice on the play due to an outfield throwing error.

Eastern Illinois mounted a comeback but fell short as Emma Henderson retired EIU's Morgan Hance for the final out.

In the championship game, SIUE outhit the Panthers 5-3. EIU, however, picked up a key hit in the bottom of the eight as Kendall Grover doubled to left center. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and then scored with two outs on a wild pitch.
