Men's Soccer Opens 2025 Season at Home Thursday

OPENING NIGHT: SIUE opens its 59th season of men's soccer Thursday night. The program's all-time record is now 614-336-101 (.639). The 2025 season is the 18th for the Cougars since returning to Division I play in 2009.

SERIES STUFF: Tonight marks the first-ever meeting between the SIUE Cougars and the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in men's soccer.

LAST SEASON: SIUE won a treble for the second consecutive year, winning trophies for the Bronze Boot match against Saint Louis, the Ohio Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships.

HOME COOKING: SIUE has successfully defended its home turf over the past two seasons. The Cougars are 17-1-2 at Korte Stadium since the start of the 2023 season.

OWNING THE OVC: In two seasons since the OVC began men's soccer, the Cougars have just one loss to Conference opponents and sport a 17-1-2 record in regular season games and a 4-0 mark in the OVC Tournament.

AT THE HELM: Two-time OVC Coach of the Year Cale Wassermann begins his seventh season in charge of the Cougars, and his 12th overall as a head coach. He has a record of 52-35-15 (.584) in six full seasons at SIUE. He is third all-time in wins at SIUE.

MINDING THE NET: SIUE has had the Goalkeeper of the Year in each of the first two years of OVC men's soccer. In 2023 Sam Gomez won the award. Rob Gjelaj earned the honors in 2024. Freshman Noah Scheidweiler is projected to make the majority of the starts in goal in 2025.

TOURNAMENT TIME: SIUE made its 25th NCAA Tournament appearance and its 17th appearance in the Division I tournament. It gave the Cougars consecutive NCAA appearances for the first time since the 2006 and 2007 seasons (Division II). SIUE has two National Championships (1972, 1979).

PRO TRADITION: More than 75 former SIUE players have gone on to play professional soccer, including MLS veteran Matt Polster, who has played more than 200 games in a 10-year career in the league.

PROGRAM HISTORY: winning percentage at the start of the season ranks 23rd all-time. This is the 18th season since returning to NCAA Division I competition.
