EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – A Homecoming crowd of nearly 2,400 was on hand Saturday as SIUE men's soccer fell to Lindenwood 2-0 at in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams at Korte Stadium.
The Cougars dropped to 0-1 in the OVC and 1-7-0 overall. Lindenwood remained unbeaten at 8-0-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.
Following a scoreless first half, the Cougars were dealt a blow in the 56th minute when Archie McDonnell was cautioned for a second time in the game, resulting in a red card and ejection.
SIUE held its ground admirably for more than 20 minutes, even creating several scoring chances, without finding the back of the net.
Lindenwood broke out on top in the 77th minute when Alander Soares scored at the back post after a long pass in from George Chandler.
Ethan Blake found Gavin Czizar with 1:15 left in the game to double the Lions' lead.
Shots in the game were even at 11 apiece. Lindenwood put five shots on goal compared to three from SIUE.
The Cougars continue OVC play Thursday when they travel to Western Illinois for a 3:30 p.m. contest with the Leathernecks.
