CHARLESTON, Ill. – SIUE men's soccer had its three-game winning streak snapped as Eastern Illinois collected a 1-0 win Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
The Cougars dipped to 4-5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Eastern Illinois improved to 3-5-2 overall. The Panthers also are 2-1 in the OVC.
EIU struck late in the game, scoring the game winner in the 89th minute. Adam Boykin sent a cross from the left side to the opposite end line inside the box. Sergej Misic collected the pass and played it into the six-yard box where Bernardo Hanel tapped it in for the only score of the game.
The Cougars peppered the EIU goal with 15 total shots, including 12 in the second half. They outshot the Panthers 14-12. EIU had a 6-5 edge in shots on target.
SIUE had seven shots alone in the last 19 minutes. Grant Locker just missed an opportunity in the 81st minute, when he banged a shot off the crossbar.
Ryley Gibbs led SIUE with four total shots and Dominic Bartoni finished with three shots and put two on goal. Mathias Clausen and Locker both had two shots.
Kai Odagiri made five saves for the Panthers. Brady Cochrane also turned away five shots for the Cougars.
The win marked the first for EIU against SIUE since 1996. The Cougars had won 10 consecutive games in the series.
SIUE continues on the road for the next two games. The Cougars will play at Incarnate Word Thursday afternoon.
