FLORENCE, Ala. – Four SIUE pitchers combined to limit Noth Alabama to a single run on five hits Saturday as the Cougars picked up their first win of the year, defeating the Lions 2-1 in the finale of a three-game series.
SIUE finished 1-2 in its season-opening series with North Alabama and will open the home season with a Tuesday afternoon contest with Illinois State at Roy E. Lee Field.
Tim Teixeira made his first start of the season and allowed a run over four innings. He struck out three. Wyatt Doak followed, making his collegiate debut, striking out two of the three batters he faced in the fifth inning.
Joseph Martin (1-0) struck out six and allowed a single hit to earn his first win of the season. Easton Harris pitched a perfect ninth innings, striking out one to earn his first save.
After UNA took a 1-0 lead in the third, Gage Franck singled in Ryan Niedzwiedz in the fourth to tie the score. Niedzwiedz singled to drive in Daniel Gierer in the fifth to put the Cougars in front.
Franck and Ethan Willoughby each finished with two hits.
The Cougars outhit the Lions 7-5 in the game.
