BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – SIUE freshman Mia Volpert has been selected as the Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Volpert, a right-hander from Springfield, Illinois, did not allow a run over her 12 innings of work at this past weekend's Lion Classic.
She began the weekend with a shared shutout with Avery Arwood in a 3-0 victory over St. Thomas on Friday. Volpert struck out four during that outing. Later in the day, she threw a scoreless seventh inning in a 4-3 win over tournament host East Texas A&M, posting her first career save.
On Saturday, Volpert threw 5 2/3 innings of relief in which she allowed just one hit as the Cougars scored 10 unanswered runs in a 10-6 victory over North Texas.
SIUE, 6-9 overall, next heads to Colonel Classic in Richmond, Kentucky, where the Cougars face Bradley, Saint Louis, host Eastern Kentucky and Pittsburgh (twice). Next weekend's action will be the final regular season tournament for the Cougars and the final action before Ohio Valley Conference play gets underway March 7th.
