Cougar Baseball Comes from Behind to Hammer Billikens

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Mack Mitchell's grand slam capped an improbable comeback as SIUE baseball scored 17 unanswered runs to score a 17-7 win over Saint Louis Tuesday in seven innings at Roy E. Lee Field.

SIUE improved to 3-5 with the win.

SIUE led 13-7 going to the seventh inning. Ethan Willoughby and Isaiah Kettler both singled and Daniel Gierer drew a walk to load the bases with two outs for Mitchell.

Mitchell finished 3-5 with a pair of home runs and eight RBIs to power a Cougar offense that finished with season highs in runs and hits (15).

The Billikens (0-8) used two hits, four walks and two hit batters to score seven times in the top of the first inning to chase SIUE starter Noah Thompson.

The Cougars scored twice in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a Willoughby two-run single.

Another RBI-hit from Willoughby and a two-run single by Kyle Hepburn and Mitchell's first blast, a three-run shot, led to a seven-run third inning and pushed the Cougars ahead 9-7.

Gage Franck drove home a run with a groundout in the fourth and Willoughby picked up his fourth RBI of the game in the fifth inning to swell the lead to 11-7.

Willoughby finished 4-5 with the four RBIs.

Mitchell singled to drive in a run and Chase Bloomer drove home another in the sixth inning to make it 13-7.

The Cougars used three pitchers to shut out the Billikens after the first inning. Trent Koehler worked 1.1 innings allowing two hits and striking out one. Brennen Grams pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out four to earn his first win. Wyatt Doak pitched the final two innings, striking out two.

SIUE will play host to Eastern Michigan in a four-game series beginning Friday at Simmons Baseball Complex.
