Cougars Win Battle for First Place Over Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – SIUE women's tennis moved into first place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings Tuesday with a 7-0 rout at Lindenwood.

The Cougars won the "Golden Racket" traveling trophy after the victory at the Lindenwood Tennis Courts. SIUE now stands at 12-2 overall and 3-0 in the OVC. Lindenwood dropped to 6-5 overall and 3-1 in the OVC.

SIUE now has two matches left in the regular season against OVC opponents Southern Indiana Saturday and Western Illinois (April 11). The Cougars are aiming for the top seed at the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference Tournament (April 17-19).

Tuesday's match started with an SIUE victory in doubles play. Margaux Guibal Britt and Stefaniya Anikina overpowered Fabiana Labrador and Paola Garcia 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. Cydney Rogers and Elena Palioura clinched the double point with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Michelle Trochez and Sofiya Dunisijevic.

Singles play also went the Cougars' way. SIUE clinched the team victory with wins by Jessica Li at No. 4, Paloma Hennicaux at No. 5 and Anikina at No. 3.

The other three matches went three sets with the Cougars claiming victory in all three.

SIUE's Chloe Koons bested Mathilde Humber at No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-7, 10-3. Palioura downed Megan Caffin at No. 2 singles 7-6, 1-6, 10-4. Guibal Britt made a huge comeback to defeat Labrador at No. 1 singles 3-6, 7-6, 10-5.
