EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE women's basketball Head Coach Samantha Quigley Smith has named Veronica Sheffey as a graduate assistant coach for the upcoming 2026-27 season.

Sheffey, a native of Woodinville, Washington, comes to SIUE after completing her final playing season at TCU, where she helped the Horned Frogs to an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Championships.

"Adding Veronica Sheffey only continues to elevate our program," said Smith. "She is an elite former player, and most importantly an elite person."

She averaged 4.1 points per game while shooting 45.5 percent from the field. Sheffey hit 13 three-pointers at TCU and was 38 of 45 from the free throw line.

Sheffey previously spent two seasons at San Diego and one season at San Diego State. She led San Diego State in scoring during the 2024-25 season, averaging 11.2 points per game and recoded 21 double-digit scoring efforts. The 2024-25 Mountain West Tournament Most Valuable Player, she led the Aztecs to a Mountain West Tournament title as well as the program's first NCAA Tournament berth in more than a decade.

Sheffey's family is deep into college athletics. Her father, Tyrone, and brother, Jaden, played college football at Washington. Her grandmother, Gloria Mercer, played college basketball at Seattle.

"Having known Roni for more than five years, I have gotten to know her and her family so well," said Smith. "She was my first home visit out to Seattle when I became the head coach here at SIUE. Basketball is a full-circle sport, and this is a prime example. Our Point guards and playmakers are going to benefit greatly from the addition of Roni and our whole team from her winning experience that she can bring."
