EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's soccer blanked Webster University 3-0 Sunday night in its final tune up before Ohio Valley Conference play.
The Cougars improved to 2-4-1. Division III Webster dropped to 0-1-3.
Ryley Gibbs opened the scoring in the 18th minute, finishing from six yards out after a short pass into the box from the right side from Anthony Faupel.
Archie McDonnell scored his second goal in as many games to double the lead in the 27th minute. A shot attempt pinballed to him at the corner of the six-yard box and he headed home for his second of the year.
Dominic Bartoni hit a right foot curler to the back post to push the SIUE advantage to 3-0 in the 54th minute.
SIUE finished with a season-high 17 shots and outshot Webster 17-8, including an 8-0 advantage in the second half.
Mathias Clausen paced the Cougars with four shots and two on goal. Gibbs had three total shots. Bartoni had two shots and both were on goal.
SIUE goalkeepers Ioannis Koupepides and freshman Brady Cochrane combined for the second shutout of the year for the Cougars. Koupepides made three saves in 61 minutes. Cochrane did not make a save in 29 minutes of play, his first action as a Cougar.
The Cougars put shots on target. Webster goalkeeper Jakub Samelko allowed all three goals and made four saves in just more than 75 minutes. Charlie Leahy played the final 10:35 and did not make a save.
SIUE remains home and will open OVC play with Southern Indiana Saturday in the Homecoming game at Korte Stadium.
