Pitching Coach Brandon Scott is now in his sixth season at SIUE.
In 2021, Cougar pitchers finished with an earned run average of 6.38, which was the lowest (in a full season) for an SIUE team since 2014. SIUE Â was forced to turn to inexperienced starters in 2021, where Scott oversaw the development of freshman Noah Matheny, who earned a spot on the OVC All-Newcomer team after a team-high 11 starts covering a team-high 72.1 innings. Brant Glidewell was second in the OVC with six wins and led SIUE starters with a 4.45 ERA.
SIUE pitchers shined under Scott during the shortened-2020 season, specifically starters Kenny Serwa and Collin Baumgartner.
Serwa was a second team All-American selection by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, becoming the program’s first non-freshman All-American since 2012. He was 4-0 in four starts with a 1.33 earned run average. He struck out 42 hitters while walking only four and topped the Ohio Valley Conference in strikeouts per nine innings at 14.00. His ERA was third in the league. In 20.2 innings Baumgartner, amassed 31 strikeouts compared to just nine walks. He was second to Serwa with an average of 13.50 strikeouts per nine innings. His opponents’ batting average of .190 was fourth best in the OVC. Overall, SIUE pitchers led the league in strikeouts and finished with a 4.74 ERA, sixth best in the OVC. Their opponent’s average of .230 was second only to Murray State.
The Cougars pitching staff continued to make strides under Scott in 2019. The team earned run average was improved over 2018 and the strikeouts were increased despite playing fewer games than the season before. Pitchers Serwa and Baumgartner continued to establish themselves as front-of-the-rotation hurlers in 2019. Serwa earned All-OVC honors despite an injury-shortened season. Serwa made seven starts and tied for the OVC lead with two complete games. Baumgartner tied for third in the league with 15 starts. His 82 strikeouts led the team and his 9.93 strikeouts per nine innings was fifth best in the league.
Scott oversaw the emergence of several young pitchers in 2018. Serwa led the team with a 4.45 earned run average and 85.0 innings pitched. He became the first SIUE pitcher in four seasons to toss a complete game shutout, when he blanked Samford in late April. Freshman Collin Baumgartner and transfers Brayden Bone and Chris Robinson also established themselves on the Cougar staff. Cougar pitchers Nelson Martz and Mason McReaken played two seasons under Scott's tutelage before beginning their pro careers following the 2018 season. McReaken in his second season in the Atlanta Braves organization. Â
Scott came to SIUE after two years as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Wabash Valley College, a community college in Mount Carmel, Illinois. In addition to his duties as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Wabash Valley, Scott was involved in nearly every facet of the program, including monitoring student-athletes academic success.
In 2015, the Warriors claimed the Region XXIV championship while finishing the season 47-13. Scott’s pitching staff finished the year with a 2.40 earned run average as a team while amassing 506 strikeouts in 465 innings of work.
In Scott’s time at Wabash Valley, 19 pitchers have continued playing at a higher level. Eight pitchers from the 2016 team moved on to NCAA Division I schools. Travis Herrin (Indiana commit) was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 18th round of the 2016 MLB Draft while 11 sophomore pitchers moved on to Division I schools following the 2015 season. Â
From 2007 to 2010, Scott served as the recruiting coordinator/pitching coach at Des Moines Area Community College, where he also was involved in fund-raising and planning for a new baseball facility.
The Bears advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II World Series in 2008 and 2009.
At DMACC, Scott recruited or coached 13 players who were drafted by MLB teams. During his time, 24 players signed with Division I schools.
The native of Henderson, Kentucky, began his coaching career at his alma mater and fellow Ohio Valley Conference member Eastern Kentucky during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. At EKU, Scott’s primary responsibility was coaching the Colonels’ outfielders and coaching first base.
Scott played at Wabash Valley College during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. He finished his career playing two seasons at EKU, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 2005.
Scott and his wife Denise welcomed their first child, daughter Reese, in July 2016. The family resides in Maryville.Â
