Kurt Calvert joined the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball program as an assistant coach in September 2009.Calvert comes to SIUE as the Cougars begin year two of its transition to NCAA Division I status. He most recently was an outfielder in the Chicago Cubs organization. Selected in the 32nd round in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, Calvert was the starting center fielder for the Cubs Single-A affiliate Boise Hawks during the 2008 season.Before joining the Cubs organization, Calvert was a student-athlete at The University of Missouri-Columbia. While at Missouri, he was a member of the Tigers baseball program that garnished three straight NCAA Tournament appearances and one Super Regional appearance (2006-2008). During his senior season, he was the starting center fielder for the Tigers who were ranked as high as No. 2 nationally.During the 2008 season, he also received the Mizzou Baseball Performance Athlete of the Year award and was selected to the Big 12 Conference All-Academic Team. He was also an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes while at Missouri.Calvert earned his bachelor's degree from Missouri in spring of 2009. He is currently pursuing a master's degree at SIUE.
