James Mays was elevated to Head Athletic Trainer following the 2024-25 school year, in which he served as the Interim. He had been the Associate Head Athletic Trainer since November 2020. Mays has been on staff as an athletic trainer at SIUE since January 2007. He is a Licensed Certified Athletic Trainer and a Red Cross Professional Rescuer, certified in CPR/AED. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and has taught as a lecturer in the Kinesiology Department teaching "Responding to Emergencies: First Aid-CPR."

Mays' primary responsibilities include the men's basketball and women's tennis programs. He has previously also worked with men's soccer, softball and baseball.

Prior to joining the SIUE staff, Mays worked as an athletic trainer for Alton Memorial Hospital Human Motion Institute and a fitness center instructor for the Edwardsville YMCA.

Mays also holds a Master of Science in Education from the department of Kinesiology at SIUE. James and his wife, Rosa, have two children, daughter Leah and son Trey.
