Mitch Gilfillan enters his first year as an assistant coach atSIUE after serving the last four years on the coaching staff atBall State University of the Mid-American Conference.

 
After serving a year at Ball State as the Director of BasketballOperations in 2009-10, Gilfillan was elevated to assistant coach atage 26, making him the youngest assistant coach in the MAC at thetime. In his first year as an assistant, the Cardinals finished19-13, marking the 11th most wins in a singleseason in Ball State history.

 
While coaching the Cardinals, Gilfillan was instrumental in theCardinals’ recruiting process, including helping theCardinals land one of the top junior college players in the countryin Majok Majok. Known as a tireless recruiter, Gilfillan also wasinvolved with scouting, game preparation, practice planning andcommunity relations.

 
Gilfillan worked closely with the Ball State guards, and helpedmentor standouts Randy Davis and Jauwan Scaife. Davis finished hiscareer third on Ball State's all-time assists list with 446 andfinished second nationally in assist/turnover ratio as asenior.  Scaife, an All-MAC performer as a senior, finishedhis career with the second most three-pointers made in Ball Statehistory.  While on staff, Gilfillan also coached three All-MACRookie team selections and one of Ball State’s most elitepost players in school history, four-time All-MAC performer JarrodJones, who would later earn a spot on the Sacramento Kings SummerLeague team before competing overseas.

 
A native of Morton, Ill., Gilfillan was a four-year letter winneras a player at Lehigh University.  After earning PatriotLeague All-Rookie honors as a freshman, Gilfillan helped Lehighclaim its first ever Patriot League regular season and tournamentchampionships as a sophomore, which led to a berth in the 2004 NCAAtournament.  As a senior, Gilfillan was named team captainwhile finishing with a 19-12 record.

 

Gilfillan also was highly decorated off the court at Lehigh,earning the Undergraduate Merit Award, Outstanding Service Award,Coaches Award, and the Southside Booster Award. He graduated in2006 with a bachelor’s degree in political science beforeearning a Juris Doctor from Valparaiso University School of Law in2009.

 
Gilfillan graduated from Peoria Notre Dame High School in 2002after earning 11 varsity letters.  As a three-sport athlete,Gilfillan earned all-state honors in basketball and soccer. He was named a McDonald’s All-American nominee and was amember of the St. Louis Eagles AAU team.
