Laura Gonsalves begins her third season as assistant coach onAmanda Levens' staff. Gonsalves' primary focus is the post playersbut she assists in all facets of the game. Gonsalves came to SIUEfrom the University of Alaska Fairbanks where she served as theassistant coach for the 2007-2008 season. While at UAF, Gonsalveshelped coach the No. 2 scorer in the Great Northwest AthleticConference. Before UAF, Gonsalves served as the associate headcoach at Western State College in Gunnison, Colo. During the2006-2007 season, Gonsalves helped the Mountaineers to a 15-13record, which included a 13-6 record in conference action. She alsospent two seasons as an assistant at Southern Utah University,where she was responsible for recruiting and post playerdevelopment. Prior to coaching, Gonsalves enjoyed a broadinternational playing experience. From 1996-2003, she played forteams in Belgium, the Czech Republic, Portugal, China andSwitzerland. Gonsalves claimed Most Valuable Player honors twice inChina National Cup tournaments, in a country where she was one ofthe first Americans to play basketball as a professional. From 1991to 1995, she was a four-year starter at the University ofWashington. During her collegiate career, the Huskies advanced theNCAA tournament three times and won the inaugural WNIT Pre-SeasonTournament in 1994. Gonsalves holds a bachelor's degree in generalstudies from the University of Washington.
