Kyler Updyke, a three-time All- American in men's tennis, is in his fifth year as SIUE Coach. He was an Assistant Coach during the 1997-98 and 2005-2006 seasons.As a player, Updyke was a nationally-ranked USTA junior, and competed on the national and international level from age 11. He also was a team member of the USTA Midwest Davis Cup Team. Updyke started his collegiate career at William Carey College in 1990, where he competed for a NAIA Team title.He was an All-American in doubles during the 1992-93 and 1993-94, reaching the finals of the NCAA Division II Tournament. He finished three years at SIUE as the No. 2-ranked doubles team in Division II. During his senior year he was the ITA Midwest Singles Champion and finished No. 5 in the National Small College ITA and as the No. 5 ranked player in Division II, earning him All-American status.During his time as coach at SIUE, the Cougars returned to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships. During the 2007-season 08 his top players earned Freshman of the Year for the men's and women's team. The SIUE women's tennis team finished with a Midwest ranking of No. 5, with the top player finishing No. 12 in the Midwest. The top men's player finished No. 8 in the Midwest in NCAA Division II.The Cougars also have made the transition to Division I under Updyke. The teams handled the first year with some success and look to the next several years to return SIUE Tennis to its prominence that they have enjoyed over the past 40 years.The tennis Cougars also have enjoyed a great run on academics under Updyke receiving the highest GPA for the men's program during the 07-08 season as well as 08-09 season. His team also has an extensive list of Dean's list awardees and several that have graduated with the highest honors.Updyke earned a bachelor of science in 1998 from SIUE. He and his wife Jamie have two daughters, Noni and Macy.
