SIUE Evens Record at 6-6

Box Score

December 29, 2001

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville continued the trend of balanced scoring and toppled Wayne State (Mich.) 67-60 in a non-conference men's basketball game Saturday at the Vadalabene Center.
Ron Heflin came off the bench to lead all scorers with 17 points and nine rebounds.
The win was an important one for the Cougars for several reason. First, the Cougars evened their record to 6-6. A win over Wayne State also is considered a Great Lakes Region victory and will help SIUE as well as the Great Lakes Valley Conference when NCAA bids are handed out in March. Wayne State lost its second straight and fell to 7-4.
Marty Perry pumped in 14 points to lead SIUE's starters in scoring. Tim Bauersachs scored 11 points, including a pair of key putbacks in the second half. Rob Baumgardner added 10 points.
Justin Chapman was 6 of 8 from the field for Wayne State and led four players in double figures for the Warriors with 14 points.
Wayne State led 30-29 at halftime and surrendered the lead only once late in the half. The Warriors charged out to a seven-point lead at 46-39 in the second half, but a pair of three-pointers from Heflin eventually put the Cougars up 47-46.
The two teams exchanged the lead nine times and were tied six more times. SIUE held off Wayne State from the 4:55 mark as Wes Pickering scored a bucket, was fouled and then coverted on the three-point play at 52-51.
The Cougars are in the midst of a four-game homestand. SIUE next faces GLVC rival Indianapolis. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
