QUINCY, Ill. -- Josh Cate (Imperial, Mo.) doubled home the eventual winning run in the opener Saturday to help Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball take a split at Quincy University.
         SIUE, 14-13 overall and 1-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, defeated Quincy 6-4 in the first game. Quincy fired back in game two with a 3-1 decision.
         In the first game, Cate doubled home Josh DeWitte (Moline) from first, breaking a 4-4 tie. Cate eventually scored on a double by Dave Crouthers (Edwardsville) to give SIUE the eventual 6-4 cushion. Bret Giaudrone (Gillespie) picked up the victory with three innings of shutout relief of Josh Clark (Olalla, Wash.).
         In the nightcap, Quincy's Josh Kinney outdueled Crouthers as he scattered six hits and allowed just a second-inning run. Kinney and Crouthers both struck out eight. Quincy's Ben Piatt powered the Hawks with three extra-base hits.
         SIUE and Quincy hook up again on Sunday as the two teams play a single game beginning at 1 p.m.
