Cougars Drop Two to Lewis on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
April 14, 2001

In a battle for first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, Lewis University (36-9, 13-3) came out on top with a sweep of the Southern Illinous University Edwardsville softball team (26-12, 13-5) at Cougar Field.
Four seniors playing in their last home game at SIUE went a combined five for 13 with a double, and RBI and two runs scored in game two. Jill Ibeck (Bartonville), Cindy Kolda (Troy), Mandy Uhrhan (Dupo) and Amy VanderVinne (Moline) were honored before game two but fell to Lewis 6-4.
The Cougars were the first to threaten in game two when they loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning. VanderVinne led off the inning with a single to left field. She was followed by a bunt single by Erin Newman (Fairfield, Cal.). After a Kelly Clay (Sacramento, Cal.) sacrifice, Uhrhan was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out.
Ibeck then attempted a squeeze bunt, but the pinch-running Jenny Esker (Steeleville) was called out at home. Valerie McCoy (Bethalto) followed with an RBI single, but the Cougars, who left 10 runners on base in the game, were retired with the bases loaded.
Down 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh with two outs Ibeck and McCoy hit back-to-back singles, but Melissa Lindgren (Frankfort) grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.
In the first game the Cougars managed just one hit off of starting pitcher Emily Granath. SIUE's Dawn Farmer was equally as strong, scattering three hits through the first six innings.
In the top of the seventh with no score the Flyers loaded the bases on a single, an intentional walk and a hit batter. Two unearned runs were scored on a throwing error to first base with one out.
The Cougars will now try to regroup after falling from first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. They travel to Battle Creek, Mich. next weekend for the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge.
