Cougars Split Doubleheader With Indianapolis

         (EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.) After falling behind early in game one, the No. 25 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team struck first in game two and split its doubleheader with No. 10 Indianapolis at Roy Lee Field this afternoon.
         The Coguars, 29-17 overall and 15-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, lost the first game 11-5. SIUE won game two 6-1.
         In game one, the Cougars fell behind 2-0 after one inning. Indianpolis opened the game up in the second, scoring five runs. SIUE scratched out a run in the bottom of the second inning but a four-run fourth inning put the Greyhounds ahead 11-1. The Cougars added a run in the fifth inning and three runs in the sixth off a three-run homer by Luke Humphrey (Rantoul).
         Josh Clark (Olalla, Wash.) picked up his first loss of the season (3-1), pitching 5.0 innings and allowing 11 runs on a 11 hits. Mark Quisenberry (Marquette Hts.) pitched two innings of no-hit relief for the Cougars.
         The Cougars scored first in the nightcap, posting five runs in the bottom of the second. Josh DeWitte (Moline) led off with a single to right center. Steve Berra (St. Charles, Mo.) followed with an RBI double. With one out, Todd Haug (Rosewood Hts.) walked. With two outs, Nick Seibert (Worden), whose SIUE record 24-game hitting streak was snapped in game one, launched his seventh home run of the year to left field. Chad Opel (Edwardsville) reached after being hit by a pitch. Mark Bugger (Edwardsville) followed with an RBI single to right field to cap off SIUE's scoring.
         SIUE added one more run in the fourth inning. Matt Wilkinson (Melbourne, Australia) pitched a gem, going 8.1 innings, scattering five hits while allowing only one run. Wilkinson improved his record to 7-0 on the season.
         The Cougars return to conference action tomorrow afternoon against Northern Kentucky. The doubleheader begins at noon at Roy Lee Field.
