Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
April 29, 2001

Erin Newman (Fairfield, Calif.) blasted home runs in both games as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville swept past Bellarmine University 3-2 and 4-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference softball action on Sunday.
SIUE, 34-13 overall and 17-5 in the GLVC, secured the second seed in next week's league tournament at Kenosha, Wis. SIUE figures to play sixth-seeded Bellarmine (26-20, 12-10) in the first round of the tournament, which begins Friday. The Cougars head into the GLVC Tournament having won five in a row and eight of their last nine games.
On Sunday, SIUE topped Bellarmine behind Newman's team-leading 14th and 15th home runs of the season. In game one, Newman's two-run homer gave the Cougars the lead for good in the sixth inning. In the nightcap, Newman gave the Cougars a first-inning lead with a two-run homer.
The junior third baseman also leads the Cougars with 58 runs batted in, which broke the 1998 record of 56 set by Sarah Sollberger. Newman leads SIUE this season with a .418 batting average.
Dawn Farmer (Columbia) threw seven strong innings in game one to improve her season record to 14-5. Missy Koenig (Mapleton) won the nightcap and improved her freshman season record to 11-6.
