Claxton's Single Seals Sweep of Tigers

         (EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.) Koree Claxton's single in the bottom of the sixth gave the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball team a 2-1 lead and sealed the doubleheader sweep of Lincoln University.
         With the two victories, the Cougars (22-8) extended their winning streak to six and have won 13 of their last 14 games. This is their third six-game winning streak on the season.
         With the score tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two, Katie Waldo (Peoria) had a lead-off double to left field. Jenny Esker's (Steeleville) sacrifice bunt moved Waldo to third before Claxton (Rantoul) drove her in.
         Lincoln (10-23) took a 1-0 lead in game two on a single that bounced off the glove of a diving Valerie McCoy (Bethalto) at second base. In the fifth inning, Melissa Lindgren tied the score with a home run that easily cleared the fence in left field.
         Missy Koenig (Mapleton) improved her record to 7-4 after seven innings pitched. She gave up three hits and one run while striking out five and walking two.
         Erin Newman (Fairfield, Cal.) powered the Cougars to a 9-1 win in six innings in game one. Newman had two home runs, a double and four RBI. Mandy Uhrhan (Dupo) went 4 for 4 with two runs and an RBI.
         The Cougars scored a run in every inning after the first and ended the game with four in the bottom of the sixth. Waldo started the offense with a bunt single. Stephanie Ing (Peoria) followed with an infield single before Newman hit her second consecutive home run. After Claxton lined out to center, Uhrhan doubled to to left field. With runners on second and third, Jill Ibeck's (Bartonville) single gave the Cougars an eight run lead and ended the ball game.
         Dawn Farmer (Columbia) improved her record to 8-3 after pitching six innings. She gave up five hits and one earned run and has a team-low 1.44 earned run average.
