SIUE Splits at UMSL

         Dawn Farmer hurled a five-hit shutout as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville split at Missouri-St. Louis, winning 3-0 and falling 3-2 in the naightcap.
         SIUE ran its Great Lakes Valley Conference-leading record to 23-9 overall and 10-2 in the league. UMSL is now 11-17 and 3-6 in the GLVC.
         The Cougars did not score until the sixth when they tallied twice. Erin Newman (Fairfield, Calif.) tripled home a run and then scored on an RBI single by Koree Claxton (Rantoul). SIUE scored once more in the seventh as Katie Waldo (Peoria) stole third and then scored as UMSL catcher Kim Abbott tossed the ball into left field.
         In the nightcap, UMSL jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third as Andrea Wirkus tripled abd scored on a passed by SIUE starter-loser Ryan Spann (Bethalto).
         The Cougars scored their only two runs in the third inning as Valerie McCoy (Bethalto) singled home Newman and Stephanie Ing (Peoria).
         UMSL countered with the eventual winning run in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles from Chrissy Griefe and Brandy Winters.
         SIUE returns home to Cougar Field on Sunday as the Cougars play host to Quincy University for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
