Cougars Extend Streak with wins over Rangers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
April 8, 2001

At the beginning of the day on Sunday there were two streaks on the line. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team came to Edwardsvile riding the momentum of a nine-game winning streak. The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team countered with an eight-game winning streak of their own.
At the end of the day there were still two streaks. The Cougars now stand at the top of the Great Lakes Valley Conference South Division with a record of 24-15 and 10-2 in the GLVC and a 10-game winning streak while the Rangers have now dropped two straight and are 22-10 and 7-5 in the GLVC.
Nick Seibert (Worden) had an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth to give the Cougars a 2-1 win in game one. With two out in the bottom on the ninth inning, Luke Humphrey (Rantoul) doubled to center field. Seibert followed with a double to the fence to give the Cougars the victory.
Josh Clark (Olalla, Wash.) threw six and a third innings for the Cougars. He gave up five hits and one earned run while striking out nine. He was replaced by Bret Giaudrone in the top of the seventh after Brian Rehm advanced to third from first on a sacrifice bunt.
Giaudrone allowed Rehm to score on a single down the first base line by Andy Garms. It was the only hit Giaudrone allowed as he retired the next eight batters in order, striking out three.
Giaudrone notched his second win of the day in game two after two and two thirds innings of relief in a 6-4 Cougar victory.
SIUE jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the inning when starting pitcher Seibert hit a three-run home run.
The Rangers chased Seibert in the fifth inning with two runs on one hit and three walks.
In the bottom of the inning the Cougars opened up another lead when Dave Crouthers (Edwardsville) hit his seventh home run of the season. It came after Chad Opel's (Edwardsville) double and an intentional walk to Mark Bugger (Edwardsville). -siue-
