Cougars Hand Quincy Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
April 8, 2001

Erin Newman (Fairfield, Calif) ripped a three-run homer, her 10th blast of the season, as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville rolled to a doubleheader sweep over Quincy 11-3 in six innings and 7-0.
SIUE improved to 25-9 overall and 10-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Cougars remain in first place.
Newman drove home four runs in the first game and added a squeeze bunt single along with her home run. Newman recorded five hits and is not batting .407, her first time this season over the .400 mark.
Dawn Farmer (Columbia) picked up her 10th victory as she scattered five hits in the game called in the sixth innings on the eight-run rule. Quincy's only scoring of the day came off the bat of Bobbie Bell with a three-run homer in the fourth inning off Farmer.
Missy Koenig, a freshman from Mapleton, threw a masterful three-hitter in the nightcap. She struck out four and walked two in seven innings of work.
Kelly Clay (Sacramento, Calif.) led the offense in game two with three hits and two runs batted in.
SIUE now has nearly a week to wait for its biggest weekend to date with Wisconsin-Parkside invading Cougar Field on Friday and Lewis heading to Edwardsville on Saturday. Both schools were NCAA qualifiers along with SIUE last season and are in the hunt for postseason bids once again.
