(EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.) For the second consecutive season, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball team has earned a bid to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Romeoville, Ill.
"I am very happy with the bid," said Coach Sandy Montgomery. "We have had a real good year. We have as good a shot as anyone to win the regional."
The Cougars, who are making their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance, earned the No. 3 seed in the regional with a record of 38-15. SIUE faces No. 2 Grand Valley State, 47-5-1, on Friday at 9 a.m. Lewis University, 49-10, earned the No. 1 seed and plays No. 4 West Virginia Wesleyan, 35-7, on Friday at 11:30 a.m
Montgomery said her team is aiming to advance further in the tournament.
"We want to win region and I think we can. If we get good pitching on the same day that we have good hitting, we have a real good shot."
SIUE finished second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season. The Cougars advanced to the GLVC championship game last Sunday against Lewis but lost 5-0.
"I was very pleased with how we played last weekend. Even though we didn't win the championship, we played very well."
