Bears Upend Cougars

         The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball team played tough, but fell 3-1 against Washington (Mo.) University at the Vadalabene Center Wednesday night. Game scores were 30-24, 30-24, 25-30, 30-27.
         It was the fifth loss in the last six games for the Cougars, as they dip to 13-8 on the season. The Washington (Mo.) University Bears, the #1-ranked team at the Division III level, improves to 26-0 on the year.
         The Bears created noise early, taking the first two games from the Cougars. SIUE stormed back, however, and took game three on a Kelly Schaill (Princeton) clinching kill.
         Game four was back and forth, with Washington ultimately closing out the match.
         Leading the attack for Washington was Katie Quinn who finished the night with 15 kills. Kindra Westendorf (Effingham), who hammered 16 kills, led SIUE offensively. Erica Schuette (St. Charles, Mo.) posted a career-high 60 assists.
         SIUE will begin a weekend road swing on Friday against GLVC foe Saint Joseph's. They travel to Indianapolis for a Saturday afternoon conference matchup. The Cougars then will enjoy a five-game homestand beginning Oct. 25 against Kentucky Wesleyan at the Vadalabene Center.
