Cougars Top Lewis in Five-Set Thriller

         The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball team had three players with 20 or more kills as it defeated the Flyers of Lewis University 3-2 Saturday at the Vadalabene Center. Game scores were 26-30, 30-25, 31-33, 35-33 and 9-15.
         Jennifer Trame (Highland) paced the Cougars' attack by registering 24 kills. Kindra Westendorf (Effingham) and Andrea Voss (St. Rose) pounded 20 kills each.
         Erica Schuette (St. Charles, Mo.) finished the match with a career-high 74 assists.
         Defensively, the Cougars were led by Kari Karban (Belleville) who had 22 digs. Amanda Wulfe (Vacaville, Calif.) and Trame had 14 digs each, and Schuette contributed 13.
         Lewis (23-3 overall, 11-3 GLVC) was led by Mary Corsten, who picked up 25 kills. Katie Gilman recorded 20 kills for the Flyers.
         The two teams traded victories in the first four games, and SIUE hit a solid .238 in game five to seal the victory. Westendorf notched the match-clinching kill.
         SIUE now has a record of 5-1 in five-game matches, with their only loss coming to Northern Kentucky.
         SIUE will seek revenge Wednesday at the Vadalabene Center, as they host Missouri-St. Louis for a 7 p.m. GLVC matchup. UMSL defeated SIUE 3-1 in early-October.
