Cougars Overpower Kentucky Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
March 23, 2002

RyAnn Spann (Bethalto) tossed a one-hit shutout in game one, and Southern Illinois University took the sweep over Kentucky Wesleyan with a 10-2 win in five innings in the nightcap.
SIUE, 23-6 and 2-0 in the GLVC, used 13 strikeouts from Spann to down the Panthers in the GLVC opener 2-0. KWC's Becky Nix singled to leadoff the game. The Panthers then struggled at the plate, gaining only a few runners but not even leaving any runners on base.
Valerie McCoy (Bethalto) picked up the game-winning RBI in the first inning on an infield groundout which scored Jenny Esker (Steeleville). Erin Newman (Fairfield, Calif.) provided SIUE's other RBI in the fifth inning also on an infield out.
In the nightcap, SIUE's bats came alive. After KWC yielded just six in the first game, the Cougars exploded for 10 runs on 15 hits. McCoy was 3 for 4 with four RBIs. Newman was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Koree Claxton (Rantoul) singled home the 10th run, forcing the game to stop because of the eight-run mercy rule.
SIUE's next action is Sunday when it takes on Bellarmine at Cougar Field. Game time is set for noon. Bellarmine comes into the doubleheader with an 11-5 record and a 2-0 GLVC amrk after sweeping Southern Indiana 7-1 and 3-2 on Saturday.
