Pitching Lifts Cougars Over Knights

       RyAnn Spann (Bethalto) tossed a one-hit shutout in game one, and Melissa Koenig (Mapleton) scattered five hits as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville swept Bellarmine 2-0 and 2-1 Sunday at Cougar Field.
       SIUE, 25-6 and 4-0 in the GLVC, have now won seven straight and 10 out of its last 11 games. The No. 8-ranked Cougars sit atop the GLVC standings as the lone undefeated team after the first week of play.
      
       Spann tossed anothe one-hit gem in the opener. JoJean Parrish beat out an infield hit for Bellarmine's lone scratch against the Cougars. Spann struck out nine and walked two in seven innings of work to improve her season record to 14-2.
       Samantha Easterley (Belleville/Althoff) singled home the eventual game-winning run in the second inning.
       Koenig struck out five in her complete game victory. She helped herself at the plate with a two-run triple in the second inning, scoring Veronica Schmidt (Westmont) and Melissa Lindgren (Frankfort).
       SIUE's next action is Friday at Lewis. The doubleheader, featuring the two teams in the NCAA Regional Championship game last season, starts at noon in Romeoville.
