SIUE Overpowers Lewis

       ROMEOVILLE - No. 4-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville cracked four home runs and swept Lewis 7-1 and 7-1 Friday in Great Lakes Valley Conference softball action.
       Jenny Esker (Steeleville), Erin Newman (Fairfield, Calif.), Koree Claxton (Rantoul) and Cassie Witherell (Abingdon) all homered for the Cougars, which improved to 27-6 overall and 6-0 in the GLVC. Of SIUE's 17 hits in the doubleheader, 10 were for extra bases.
       RyAnn Spann (Bethalto), a three-time GLVC Pitcher of the Week this season, tossed a four-hitter in the first game. She struck out seven and did not walk any Flyers. Spann improved her season record to 15-2.
       The Cougars jumped out front early with an RBI single from Esker in the third inning.
       SIUE held Lewis scoreless until the sixth when Wendy Rochon blasted a homer over the left field fence.
       SIUE answered back in the top of the seventh with a timely six-run rally. Esker blasted a grand slam. Valerie McCoy (Bethalto) then doubled and was followed by Newman's homer.
       Lewis slipped to 12-12 overall and 3-3 in the GLVC after game two when Missy Koenig allowed just three hits in a six-inning game shortened by darkness.
       The Cougars didn't wait as long to strike this time. Claxton homered to tie up the score 1-1 in the second. SIUE took the lead for good in the third inning on a two-run homer from Witherell.
       SIUE now moves on to play at Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday. Game time for the doubleheader in Kenosha, Wis., is 1 p.m.
