Cougars Sweep UMSL

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

April 7, 2002

The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball team continued to dominate the Great Lakes Valley Conference, sweeping Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday.
The Cougars, now 34-7 and 13-1 in the GLVC, topped conference rival Missouri-St. Louis (19-16, 4-5 GLVC) 9-1 in five innings in the first game and 4-0 in the nightcap.
The Cougars got things off to a good start in game one, rallying for seven runs in the first inning. Cassie Witherell and Amanda Farmer each had two-RBI hits in the inning.
RyAnn Spann shut down the Riverwomen with just one hit. UMSL scored an unearned in the fifth. The Cougars closed the game out in the bottom of the fifth due to the eight-run slaughter rule as Melissa Lindgren singled home Koree Claxton.
Missy Koenig tossed a three-hit shutout in the second game. Claxton led SIUE with two hits and two RBIs in the victory.
SIUE plays its next game at home on Friday in a non-conference battle against Central Missouri State at 4 p.m. on Cougar Field.
