Late Surge Lifts Cougars over No. 17 Ashland

         Southern Illinois University Edwardsville scored twice in less than three minutes in the second half and upset No. 17-ranked Ashland Saturday in women's college soccer action.
         Becky Baker headed in the game-winner with an assist from freshman Christen Carducci at 76:24. Ann Crawford had tied the score on an unassisted goal at 73:48.
         "As good as they played in the first half, we played as good in the second half," said SIUE Coach Brian Korbesmeyer.
         It was the first game of the season for both squads.
         SIUE struggled at the beginning of the game, allowing a pair of goals from Ashland in the first 20 minutes of the game.
         Ashland's Emily Hallman scored an unassisted goal at 10:49. Marian Manzo followed up with a score at 19:26.
         The Cougars didn't get on the scoreboard until the first-half buzzer. hit. SIUE freshman forward Sarah Landt knocked in a dropped ball by Ashland goalkeeper Amanda Lindsey. Referees said the goal, which was started by an SIUE corner kick, was good as the teams headed to the locker room for halftime.
         "That really gave us a lift," said Korbesmeyer.
         Korbesmeyer also credited senior Colleen Creamer. Despite her one shot, the forward was a playmaker for the Cougars and kept the flow going.
         SIUE now turns to Sunday's matchup with Northern Michigan. The Cougars won a hard-fought 1-0 game in the team's meeting last season. The winning goal in that game was scored with just 31 seconds left in the game.
