Cougars Advance to GLVC Semifinals

         HIGHLAND HTS., Ky. - Heather Bonde (Millstadt) collected 10 kills, seven service aces and nine blocks as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville advanced to the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference volleyball Tournament with a four-game victory over Lewis.
         Bonde's seven service aces was a season-high for the Cougars and a career-high for the sophomore middle hitter from Millstadt. SIUE, 25-6, won the match 30-22, 30-22, 27-30, 30-26.
         The Cougars, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, advance to play Indianapolis in the semifinals. Indianapolis defeated Wisconsin-Parkside in three games to open the GLVC Tournament.
         In Thursday's win over Lewis, Bonde was joined by four other Cougars who recorded double figures in kills. Andrea Voss (St. Rose) led all Cougars with 15 kills. She was followed by Kindra Westendorf (Effingham) with 12 and Tina Talsma (Canada) and Allison Buss (Towanda) with 11 each.
         Cougar setter Krystal Majernik (Normal) also was solid with 52 assists and three blocks.
         The Cougars dominated the play in the first two games and ended up with 13 services aces. SIUE also controlled the net on defense with 14 blocks led by Bonde's nine and Voss's eight.
         Lewis ended its season with a 16-12 record. Katie Gilman completed her collegiate career with the Flyers with 20 kills and five blocks.
