Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Breanne Steffens (Moline) shattered her own school record Saturday in the 6,000-meter run and earned a trip to the NCAA Women's Cross Country Championships.
Steffens ran the course in 21 minutes, 42.9 seconds, eclipsing her own record set at the 2003 GLVC Championships, where she ran the meet in 22:31.1. As a team, SIUE placed seventh and were able to place three runners in the top 50 in a field of 134 runners. The two four teams and next two individuals advanced to the national meet.
Steffens advances to the national meet, which will be held Nov. 22. St. Augustine's College will play host to the men's and women's championships at SAS Park in Cary, N.C.
"This is a real exiting time for Cougar cross country," said SIUE Coach Darryl Frerker. "I believe this is the first time that an SIUE runner has advanced to the national meet since I started here."
Mary Witte (Normal) was SIUE's second fastest competitor as she finished 19th in 22:47.3. Erin McMullen and Carrie Carducci placed 46th and 51st, respectively.
