SIUE, Indy Split in GLVC Play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
April 26, 2003

SIU Edwardsville defeated the Indianapolis Greyhounds 5-4 in extra innings in game one of a doubleheader, but Indy shut down SIUE 3-0 in game two as the two teams played to a split in Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball action Saturday at Roy Lee Field.
Game one, a scheduled seven-inning game, saw Indianapolis jump out to a 3-0 lead after six innings. SIUE, now 19-22 and 12-12 in the GLVC, shaved Indy's lead to 3-2 after a two-run sixth inning.
         Then things got interesting.
Indianapolis, 34-16 and 17-11 in the GLVC, seemed to have had the game won when Craig Ohlau hit a lazy fly ball to shortstop with two outs in the seventh. But the ball was lost in the sun and fell in the infield for a single, driving in Justin Baecht for the game-tying run.
In the top of the eight, Indy took the lead on an errant pick-off attempt at second base.
But again, a defensive lapse cost the Greyhounds. Brad Scott hit a slow roller to shortstop that was corralled by Indy's Jeremy O'Neill, but a wild throw to first allowed Jeff Schwierjohn to score and tie the game at four.
It wasn't until the bottom-half of the tenth that SIUE sealed the game. With the bases loaded, Baecht hammered a pitch up the middle to drive in Jared Brueggeman for the game winner.
Brad Hinton, who came in relief for Brian Keating, earned the win after pitching 4-2/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out six while walking only one.
Game two of the doubleheader was all Indianapolis.
Indy starter Nolan Bastien allowed only three hits and struck out six in the complete-game shutout.
Jeremy Kliewer, O'Neill and Matt East all tallied RBIs for the Greyhounds. Luke Humphrey had two of SIUE's hits in game two.
The two teams will be in action again tomorrow at Roy Lee Field. They will play a nine-inning conference game at noon, then a non-conference seven-inning game immediately following.
