Jarad Rettberg pitched a nine-inning complete game and allowed one run while scattering seven hits as SIU Edwardsville topped Indianapolis 9-1 in the rubber game of a three-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series today at Roy Lee Field.
         Indianapolis topped SIUE 4-3 in game two of the doubleheader. The seven-inning game did not count as a GLVC contest.
         SIUE took two of three GLVC games this weekend against Indianapolis and vaulted into fifth place in the conference standings as it improved its record to 20-23 overall and 13-12 in the GLVC.
         Rettberg allowed a run in the first inning, but cruised the rest away, allowing only five hits the rest of the game. He struck out five Indy batters and walked none.
         Rettberg got plenty of offensive help thanks to a six-run sixth inning in which the Cougars banged out eight hits. Jared Brueggeman and Jeff Schwierjohn hit back-to-back homers in the inning. Craig Ohlau, Jason Kessler and Luke Humphrey all added RBIs in the inning.
         Kessler and Ohlau added RBIs in the final two innings to give SIUE the 9-1 victory.
         SIUE will now take to the road Wednesday to face Quincy. The Cougars then close the regular season next weekend at home against Bellarmine. SIUE plays Bellarmine on Friday at GMC Stadium beginning at 7 p.m. The Cougars and the Knights play a doubleheader on Saturday at Roy Lee Field beginning at noon.
