Cougars Win Back-To-Back GLVC Titles

Box Score

May 4, 2003

         Back-to-back in 2003.
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball team walked away with the Great Lakes Valley Conference trophy Sunday with a thrilling 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Wisconsin-Parkside.
SIUE's Amy Rogers laid down a two-strike, two-out bunt with a squeeze play, scoring VJ Schmidt from third base as the Cougars took the game and the GLVC title in the eighth inning.
The Cougars, ranked No. 18 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, improved to 43-9 overall and now awaits word on the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars are in the 48-team tournament by virtue of the automatic bid but will not know its seed until sometime on Monday.
SIUE heads into the NCAA Tournament with an 11-game winning streak, having won 22 of its last 24 games.
The Cougars certainly did not make their latest win on Sunday their easiest.
Cassie Witherell doubled home the first run of the game in the third inning. Jenny Esker later followed with an RBI single, scoring Katie Waldo.
Wisconsin-Parkside, the No. 7 seed in the GLVC Tournament, deflated the Cougars with a three-run homer by Meloney Strohbusch in the fourth. The Rangers grabbed a 4-2 lead in the sixth as Emily Strohbusch smacked an RBI double to left field.
SIUE tied the game in the sixth as Esker scored on a wild pitch from UWP starter Stephanie Anderson. Koree Claxton then drove home the tying run with a single to right center.
In the eighth, Schmidt walked, stole second and move to third on the second out of the inning, an infield groundout by Claxton. Coach Sandy Montgomery then called for the squeeze and became successful after UWP first base Emily Strohbusch dropped the throw for the out.
RyAnn Spann went the distance for SIUE, fanning eight batters and walking four on a wet and windy afternoon at Cougar Field. Game time had to be moved back nearly 2 1/2 hours because of area thunderstorms.
