Cougars Blanked by Quincy

Box Score

May 8, 2003

There's probably a reason why Brandon DeJaynes was the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year.
The Quincy hurler gave up three hits in eight innings to defeat second-seeded Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 7-0 in the GLVC Tournament in St. Louis.
The Cougars managed five hits in the game as Quincy reliever Jason Rothenberger closed out the ninth inning. SIUE starter Jarad Rettberg (Divernon) lasted just 3 1/3 innings, giving up two runs. The Cougars used three other pitchers against the fifth-seeded Hawks.
The game took nearly five hours because of a 2-hour-plus rain delay, which has now left the GLVC Tournament to scramble to find another field to finish the tournament on time.
SIUE will play the loser of Missouri-St. Louis and Kentucky Wesleyan at 2 p.m. on Friday. The game's site has yet to be determined. UMSL's Rivermen Field will handle a 10 am game between UMSL and Kentucky Wesleyan, a 1 pm game between Quincy and Indianapolis, and a 4 pm game between Wisconsin-Parkside and the winner of UMSL-KWC.
In SIUE's game on Thursday, DeJaynes puzzled SIUE with nine strikeouts and just two walks.
Quincy's offense scored in four different innings. A Kevin Sewell RBI single in the first inning is all Quincy eventually would need.
