Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball once again used the total team effort in a 30-19, 30-17, 30-23 victory over Quincy on Saturday at the Vadalabene Center.
Kindra Westendorf recorded 13 kills to lead the Cougars to their fifth straight victory. The Cougars are now 18-5 overall and 9-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
With Indianapolis losing its first conference match at Northern Kentucky on Saturday and Southern Indiana sweeping Missouri-St. Louis, the top of the GLVC standings is a three-way tie at 9-1. SIUE and Southern Indiana play on Wednesday in a rematch. Southern Indiana defeated SIUE in its lone conference loss on September 29. SIUE also gets its only opportunity to play Indianapolis next Saturday when the Greyhounds come to the Vadalabene Center. And the Cougars can't forget Friday home match against Saint Joseph's, which started slow early this season but has posted a 6-4 record in league play.
In Saturday's match, Quincy was led by middle hitter Cari Hasek, who posted a game-high 17 kills. Amber Heimann, an outside hitter, collected 10 kills and 21 digs.
SIUE used all of its strengths and minimized its errors with just nine attack errors in the three-game set. Allison Buss led the defense with 21 kills.
SIUE setter Krystal Majernik led all servers with four aces. She also added five kills and two blocks. As a team, SIUE had 10 service aces and nine blocks. Tina Talsma had a quiet yet strong match with seven kills and six blocks.
