Wayne State broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the ninth inning and held on for a 3-2 victory against host SIU Edwardsville Sunday afternoon at Roy Lee Field.
        SIUE lost its bid for its third-consecutive victory and falls to 4-15 on the year. Wayne State moves to 5-7 on the season.
        Wes Pickering put the Cougars on the board in the first inning, singling home Craig Ohlau to give the Cougars the early advantage.
        But Wayne State starter Dan Barnes settled down and allowed only three Cougar hits through seven innings.
        Wayne State tied the game 1-1 in the fifth inning when Eric Boehm drove in a run with a single off of SIUE starter Ryan Spurgeon, who pitched 5.1 innings, allowing a run on five hits.
        Ron Jones relieved Spurgeon and pitched himself out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh.
        SIUE's David Briesacher was charged with the loss after allowing two runs - one earned - in the top of the ninth.
        The Cougars got a run in the ninth on a Joe Wargo RBI groundout and had the potential tying run in scoring position, but Kyle Martin struck out and Luke Humphrey grounded out to end the game.
        SIUE will next be in action Tuesday when it meets Lincoln in a rescheduled contest at Roy Lee Field. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
