SIU Edwardsville stretched its winning streak to eight games today after sweeping a doubleheader with Quincy University at Cougar Field. Game scores were 5-1 and 7-1.
The Cougars bolted 24 hits in the two games and moves its overall record to 27-11 and its conference mark to 10-2. Quincy falls to 23-17 overall and 4-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
SIUE and Quincy played scoreless ball in game one until the Cougar's fourth inning. Shanna Waldo got the Cougars on the board with an RBI single. The Cougars then scored on an error to give them a 2-0 lead that they would not relinquish.
SIUE scored three times in the fifth. Jenny Esker led off the inning with a triple, then was driven home by a Shannon Evans RBI single. Amy Rogers and Melissa Lindgren also drove in a run in the inning.
Meanwhile, SIUE starting pitcher Ashlea Hoheimer was cruising. She lost her shutout bid in the seventh inning on a Nicole Prager RBI single. In all, Hoheimer pitched seven innings, allowing one run while scattering six hits. She fanned five Quincy batters via the strikeout and walked only one.
It was much of the same in game two. Esker tripled in the first, scoring Alicia DeShasier, as the Cougars took an early 1-0 lead. SIUE drove home another run in the third when VJ Schmidt singled home Waldo.
Evans and Missy Koenig each added an RBI in the Cougars half of the fifth inning. SIUE put up a three-spot in sixth, thanks to RBIs by Esker, Evans and Schmidt.
SIUE starting pitcher Jessica Finch took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but Quincy banged out eight hits in the next two innings. Finch allowed an unearned run in the fifth inning and struck out five and walked one on the day.
The Cougars will return to action next Tuesday when they play host to Alabama-Huntsville in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
