Wisconsin-Parkside Outslugs Cougars

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

April 18, 2004

Wisconsin-Parkside rallied from a 9-1 deficit in game two of a doubleheader and eventually won the game 16-13 to complete a doubleheader sweep of SIU Edwardsville Sunday at Roy Lee Field. Wisconsin-Parkside picked up an 11-7 victory in game one.
With the two victories, Wisconsin-Parkside completed a four-game weekend sweep and remains atop the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings with an overall record of 31-13 and a 22-8 conference mark. The Cougars fall to 12-30 overall and 9-20 in the GLVC.
In game one, Wisconsin-Parkside tagged SIUE starter David Briesacher for 10 earned runs and 19 hits. Leading the offensive onslaught for UWP was second baseman Andy Garms, who had a four-hit day and drove in three runs. Right fielder Casey Garms and shortstop Justin Clarke each had three hits in game one.
The bright spots for SIUE were designated hitter Brad Scott's grand slam in the sixth inning. Michael DalPozzo cracked his first collegiate home run in the seventh. Other than that, Wisconsin-Parkside starter Bill Perdue and reliever Travis Clarke held SIUE in check. Perdue picked up the victory after allowing five earned runs of seven hits.
Game two seemed to start just the opposite from game one, as it was the Cougars who were scoring early and often. The Cougars scored four in the first to chase UWP starter Russell Schaibly from the game. Wisconsin-Parkside's bullpen did not do much better, as the Cougars took a 9-1 lead after three innings.
But Wisconsin-Parkside slowly chipped away at the lead with four runs in the sixth and five in seventh. UWP scored five times in the top of the ninth to take a 16-13 lead. SIUE tried to rally in the ninth and had the winning run at the plate, but it was all for none after a double play ball.
Center fielder Joe Wargo, designated hitter Robert Rahn and third baseman Wes Pickering each had three hits in game two. Pickering and DalPozzo each drove in three runs.
Jeff Caron, who pitched two innings of scoreless relief in game one, was charged with the loss in game two after surrendering five runs - two earned - on two hits.
The Cougars will look to break a seven-game losing skid this week when it plays host to Quincy University in a Wednesday doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
