SIU Edwardsville baseball put an end to its seven-game losing streak in a big way Wednesday, sweeping a doubleheader from third-place Quincy University at Roy Lee Field. Game scores were 3-2 and 7-3.
SIUE improves to 14-30 overall and 11-20 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and has taken three-of-four games against Quincy this season. Quincy dips to 27-21 overall and 17-13 in the GLVC.
Jarad Rettberg held Quincy to two runs on eight hits in game one. He picked up the victory after walking one and fanning two Quincy batters.
It was Quincy who struck first in game one when Kevin Reynolds scored on a double play ball.
SIUE answered in its half of the second when it scored all the runs it would need. Jared Brueggeman and Mike DalPozzo had back-to-back singles, then Kyle Martin drove home Brueggeman for the Cougars' first run of the contest. Tyler Symonds cracked an RBI single to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead. Joe Wargo drove home Martin on a fielder's choice groundout, which proved to be the winning run.
Quincy pushed across a run in the sixth inning on a home run to right field by Kevin Sewell, but it was not enough as Rettberg pitched the complete game to earn his third win of the season.
Quincy held a 3-2 lead through five innings in game two, but the game was broke open by SIUE in the sixth inning. Wargo drove in a run and DalPozzo smacked a two-run double and later scored on an error as the Cougars plated four runs in the inning.
Kyle Martin drove in two runs in the game. Tim Velten had two hits and scored a run in the contest.
The Cougars bullpen pitched five scoreless innings of relief. Jameson Sheley relieved SIUE starter Chip Durland in the fifth inning and retired the side. Then, Pat Evers pitched the remaining four innings and scattered three hits while striking out four in picking up the victory.
The Cougars will look to carry this momentum on the road when it travels to Indianapolis for GLVC doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
